Adaptations The Contemporary Dilemmas Imelda Whelehan (Final 2022)

Adaptations: The contemporary dilemmas. Imelda Whelehan. Research output: Chapter in Book/Conference paper › Chapter › peer-review. Overview title . Adaptations : from text to screen, screen to text. Richard Burt. Chippendale, Bucks, UK. Screen to text. There are numerous adaptations of Shakespeare's plays, but the problem of Shakespeare's plays as literature is rarely discussed, and if it is discussed it is usually seen as if in contradistinction to adaptations. This is a major omission given the range and number of adaptations of Shakespeare's plays, as well as of novels, memoirs and other kinds of creative works. Shakespeare's plays themselves have been adapted in a vast number of different ways, which range from recreating the plays in a new language to using Shakespeare's plays as a basis for elaborate, 'interactive' texts that allow the reader or viewer to engage with the text in other ways. In Adaptations: The contemporary dilemmas, Imelda Whelehan looks at how adaptations of Shakespeare's plays can be seen as a form of playwriting. This involves both looking at adaptations in terms of their content, in terms of the choices made in their production, and in terms of the engagement of the audience. She notes that Shakespeare's plays are often seen as a set of ideas that need to be adhered to and then tested to see whether the audience can follow what is being said. Shakespeare's plays were also performed and used in educational settings, and often as an aid to people who were learning or had difficulty learning. She notes that they were also used in many different ways that go beyond the simple act of reading or performing.
